Greetings all! I’m back on deck in the office after a successful week in Sydney for the Self Storage Association of Australasia’s (SSAA’s) annual convention & tradeshow… and what a show! The feedback from those I’ve spoken to reflect a well-organised show with plenty of interesting speakers & great content. From the tradeshow side of things – what a busy 3 days! Here’s a look back at the last few days…
Tuesday 7th August
Ben & I arrived in Sydney at 11am and after a bit of a “scenic detour” in the taxi (our taxi driver was new to Sydney and it was his 6th day on the job; thankfully he stopped the meter after the second lap of the same city block), we got to the Hilton and began to setup the tradeshow booth.
At 3pm, colleagues Aaron, Stephen & Robert (from our Auckland office) had arrived and by 5pm the flooring was down, the LCD screens were rigged and everything was ready to go – so we all had a short break before getting changed in time for the SSAA’s “Welcome Event”, at the nearby Arthouse Hotel… great finger food & entertainment. Many of us headed out for dinner with colleagues & friends afterwards.
Wednesday 8th August
Today was the first day for the tradeshow and with the opening of the doors for the first time at morning tea (and a flood of low-lying fog thanks to some dry ice machines – be sure to check out the photos below), came a flood of people and we were off!
Being near the entrance to the tradeshow certainly has its advantages – I think we had at least 100 people though the booth before the short morning tea break came to a close… some people even skipped the next plenary session & stayed behind to see some of our new software features or take in an extended demonstration of the software.
After two further tradeshow sessions at lunch & afternoon tea, we were all losing our voices and decided to have a quiet Thai dinner over at Darling Harbour together with colleagues to relax and catch up on the day.
Thursday 9th August
Before we knew it, Thursday rolled around and we were back on deck in the tradeshow stands. Only two tradeshow sessions today, but I think we managed to speak to another hundred or so people – showing off features, discussing software changes and so forth.
During the lunch tradeshow session, the SSAA conducted their “Passport” prize draw. Congratulations to all of the winners – including Hamish from All Secure, who won a copy of Storman! At 3pm, we started to pack up the tradeshow booths and Ben headed downstairs for the Storman training at 4pm.
The event was officially closed by the SSAA Awards Dinner – great company, good food and fantastic entertainment by quick-change artists Soul Mystique. Check out the link for a YouTube video on some of their work… absolutely fantastic!
A big thanks goes to the Hilton Events team for their work during the function & also to Rennie, Louise, Luisa, Pauline & Simone for their tireless work to make the convention as great as it was.
Looking forward to 2013
In a new direction for the SSAA, next year’s convention will be a little different – it will take place on Hayman Island and is targeted towards Self Storage owners. There will be no tradeshow (as such), but some high-profile speakers, networking areas & places to meet & mingle with the decision-makers. This type of convention is scheduled to take place every 2 years, with every ‘opposite’ year returning to the current format with a big convention & big tradeshow for ‘everyone’.
For those of you who weren’t able to attend the 2012 conference, I’ve included a series of tradeshow photos for you below – enjoy!
