Tuesday afternoon saw a trip to the airport for my flight to Cairns, which was a little turbulent at times due to strong headwinds, but enjoyable & uneventful otherwise.
Given Cairns is in “the tropics” of Far North Queensland (which is often abbreviated to “FNQ” – according to the signs I saw everywhere), it was a little warmer and humid than my place of departure. It had been about 7 degrees Celsius in Brisbane that morning, so when I exited the plane in sunny, warm (28 degrees) and humid (80%) Cairns, I quickly found myself removing my jacket!
After a short trip into town, I was checked-in at the hotel and headed to another local hotel for the Self Storage Association of Australia’s (SSAA’s) pre-dinner presentation. During the presentation, Susan Phillips, owner of Charters Towers Self Storage& member on the SSAA Board, took us on a fantastic journey (with photo slideshow) as she told her story about setting up a self storage facility in Charters Towers. By the way, you can watch & listen to Susan’s story here.
After Susan’s presentation, the group wandered over to Tamarind (Reef Casino) on Wharf Street for a fantastic three-course meal with fellow SSAA members. Of all the SSAA dinners I’ve attended, this one is certainly up at the top of the my “great food” list – as I’m sure you’ll agree from the photos provided. Never before have I experienced cinnamon & sultanas baked in a pastry roll (it sounds very “apple-strudel” so far, doesn’t it?) …but then replace the apple with chicken! Despite the fact that is sounds like a dessert gone wrong, Tamarind made it work as a main meal.
The actual dessert was equally fascinating – with a thin disc of white chocolate separating ice cream from a fruit & chocolate cake layer. All became clear a few minutes later, when a hot berry sauce was poured over the top, melting the disc in an instant and forming a white chocolate berry sauce… fantastic! Be sure to visit Tamarind if you’re ever in Cairns.
After dessert, the group carried on until around 10:30pm – at which time it started pouring with rain. Not for too long – but enough to get drenched in the two city blocks between the dinner venue and my hotel.
Earlville Self Storage Training
The following day, I ventured out to Earlville Self Storage, a very clean & modern 500+ unit facility located about 10 minutes from the heart of Cairns. I met with the wonderful team there (Barry, Joy, Roger, Beth & Allison) for StorMan Training, a cuppa & a delicious fruit cake – thanks Joy!
Following a full-on training session with some of the team, I was kindly dropped off at the airport by Roger and headed back to Brisbane in the evening. Thanks to everyone in Cairns for a fantastic day-and-a-half!
Don’t forget… if you’re not yet a member of your local self storage association, make sure you join – as there are many benefits to doing so! Furthermore, don’t forget to register for one of our in-person Storman training courses (if you haven’t already done so) – we’ll take you through some fantastic automation, time-saving & money-making features that are sure to pay off the course in no time. We guarantee you’ll learn something new. Until next time!
