The UK Self storage industry have been made aware that the Information Commissionerβs Office (ICO) is doing an audit on self storage businesses that have not registered to record CCTV footage for crime prevention.
Basically, any business that use CCTV for crime prevention must by law be registered with the ICO. For most businesses it is Β£40 or Β£60 for the year.Β This would apply toΒ allΒ self storage businesses that use CCTV.
It is the law to pay the data protection fee, which funds the ICOβs work.Β Aside from the fact that you can be fined for not paying the fee, as much as Β£4,000, it could also have an impact on your reputation. Paying the fee and being listed on the ICOβs register of fee payers shows that you take data protection seriously and is a strong message for your customers.
To register visit the ICO website –Β https://ico.org.uk/for-
More information on registering along with advice and guidance for your businesses is on the ICOβs website, including information about CCTV, sharing personal data and marketing.
